During my time as president, I felt it was an important goal to increase the level of professionalism in what the Ole Miss chapter could accomplish and be able to help provide an early understanding and recognition of SPJ to a younger audience, soon to enter college. With its headquarters at Ole Miss, the Mississippi Scholastic Press Association's annual spring conference provided me with the opportunity to attain that objective.
Working with the MSPA director, Beth Fitts, I designed a class lecture curriculum in headline and caption writing for the conference which I also taught. To stay consistent with my ideals of expanding our chapter's sense of student involvement and team work, I asked active member and Daily Mississippian news editor, Elizabeth Pearson to help in teaching the lecture. As each other's back-up, her focus in the lecture was teaching the different types of headlines while I focused on teaching the rules of headline writing.
Below you will find the course outline and powerpoint I designed for the class.
